Upcoming events

We love having events at TYPE.  We’ve hosted a wide range of author events in our beautiful Queen Street space.  Some highlights include an afternoon with Margaret Atwood, a rollicking Sunday kids’ reading with Evan Solomon, a jam-packed panel discussion about the hit television show “LOST,” and of course our fabulous Jack Kerouac look-alike contest.

Here are some special events planned for May in the TYPE universe:

  • May 1st @ Queen Street, Word Play Exhibition, 7PM-9PM. Curated by Angela Brayham, of Brayham Contemporary Art, Word Play consists of Steven James Brown’s photographs. The two-year project involved cutting words out of books of literature, and covering objects Brown felt related to the text with the cut-out words. (He calls this ‘word skins.’) Part of the Contact festival, the show runs until May 31st .
  • May 6th @ Queen Street,”Platform Series Lecture”, 7PM. Micah Lexier will deliver a public lecture in the store’s downstairs gallery.
  • May 12th and May 19th @ Forest Hill, “coffee and books!”10AM-1PM. Sip java, chat books and hang out with local mom Shawna in our cozy store.

Don’t forget about our weekly scheduled event, Mrs. Hanna’s Story Time @Queen Street on Thursdays at 10:30 and 11:30, and @The Danforth 10:30 on Tuesdays.

Mrs. Hanna has been a favourite Queen West educator for decades and commands a loyal following at TYPE.  She taught kindergarten at Givens-Shaw Public School for over twenty years.   A combination of stories, classic finger-play and songs and alphabet games, Mrs. Hanna’s classes are one of a kind.  No story time is complete without a variety of fun and entertaining props.  With clocks, rattles, drums and lots of books, Mrs. Hanna provides the perfect environment for toddler learning.

Be sure not to miss any upcoming events by joining our Facebook group.

We have the perfect space for signings, readings, panel discussions, and launches. For more information about attending or hosting an event at TYPE, please email Jo or Samara at info@typebooks.ca.

Word-Play update

quenn

We had a great third year at Word-Play, our neighbourhood literacy program! The program hosted students from Niagara Public School, Givins Shaw Public School and St. Mary’s Catholic School. Our five York University Teacher Candidates did a fantastic job with the kids. We are particularly proud of the success of the mentorship component of Word-Play. Mentors from grades 6 to 10 worked with the younger children in reading one-on-one and preparing special segments such as spooky stories and hilarious re-written folk tales.

Word-Play was also host to some great guests from the Toronto Public Library, the Randolph Academy leading the kids in drama and dance, and the “Yoga Queen” who led the kids in “Yoda Yoga”. We were pleased to report that Word-Play was featured on CBC’s “Living in Toronto,” and on the 11 o’clock news!

Our special thanks to all our special volunteers, the Steering Committee members, community members, the school staff who helped make the program work.

The Platform Series

typewindow

We are proud to introduce the “Platform Series”, an exciting new exhibition and lecture series hosted by TYPE Queen Street.

Conceived and coordinated by our very own Derek McCormack, the series’ first installment features Canadian art icon Micah Lexier, an internationally acclaimed artist who has exhibited at galleries and museums around the world.

The series transforms the Type Queen Street store’s window into an exhibit of an artist’s (or musician’s or fashion designer’s or filmmaker’s) favourite books.

On April 18th, Lexier unveiled his specially designed display. Check out some press coverage here and here.

Join us at our Queen Street store on May 6th @ 7PM  when Lexier will deliver a public lecture in the store’s downstairs gallery. Stay tuned for more information on this incredible new series at TYPE!

Imprint lust

As many of you know,  we regularly feature a small press that we happen to love to offer at a 15% discount at our Queen St. location.   Right now we’re featuring two until May 31st!!

NYRB is a fabulous publisher with three great imprints and a range of fascinating titles. Some of our current bestsellers are Carlo Collodi’s Pinnochio (with an introduction by Umberto Eco), School for Love by Olivia Manning (introduced by Jane Smiley), and Grief Lessons (with an introduction by Anne Carson). And, for the kids, we have the beautiful The 13 Clocks by James Thurber introduced by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Marc Simont; the stunning The Midnight Folk; and the lovely Too Big. These books are not only beautiful, they’re intelligent. Brains and beauty too!

Dispatches: Staff picks from across the stores!

Here are some recent selections from our staff – peruse and enjoy!

Lauren @ Forest Hill recommends:

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen is the book I’m most excited for this spring. T.S. Spivet is an amateur cartographer of only 12 years of age who gets a call from the Smithsonian and travels across the States, mapping as he goes. Beautifully illustrated with Spivet’s maps, this book spurred a bidding war at the Frankfurt book fair for its written and drawn examinations of family, relationships, loss, and growing up.

Lauren’s backlist classic: Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales. My go-to for the more whimsical ladies in my life who also love the classics. A collection of fairy tales written in English from around the world with a twist: all of the stories feature women as the prominent character, whether she be good or evil. Stories range in length and many could be read to children to supplement the traditional classics (Cinderella, Rumplestilskin et. al.) read to children in school and shown in Disney features. Excellent way to expose yourself to the storytelling backbone of world cultures.

Kalpna @Forest Hill recommends:

Sheds and Maps by Nigel Peake: These two slim, 32-page volumes are crammed with gorgeous, intricate illustrations by Irish-born artist/illustrator/designer Nigel Peake. From wigwams to water towers, Sheds is a collection of delicate, painstaking line drawings of primitive structures inspired by Peake’s travels in China and Europe, while Maps provides a detailed document of both real and imagined places and topographies.  Both feature carefully handwritten notes and annotations by the artist, and are sure to inspire hours of meticulous doodling.  Published by Analogue Books in the UK, these books are a must for designers and illustrators, or anyone interested and beguiled by tiny and simple yet enigmatic illustration. (Type is lucky enough to have the last remaining first editions of Maps, so get yours fast!)
